Abstract

Road networks represent a significant infrastructure investment that is very important to the well-being, growth, and development of any country. Climatic conditions and traffic loading are two of the key aspects of pavement design and performance. Other factors that affect pavement performance and the rate of deterioration over its service life are the construction material properties, construction quality, and maintenance strategy In order to preserve the pavement and prolong this expensive and valuable infrastructure, it is imperative to monitor its performance over time . Several indices are available for pavement condition assessment, of which the most recognized one is the Pavement Condition Index (PCI), which was introduced by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1980s. The PCI is expressed by a numerical value representing the pavement condition based on a rating system on a scale of 0-100. That is, as depicted by Figure (1.1), 0 corresponds to the worst possible condition of the pavement, while 100 corresponds to the best condition of the pavement.
