Abstract

Throughout the entire literary production of Jorge Luis Borges there is a permanent tendency to confuse the reader. The author tries to build a labyrinth in the form of an enigma that seems unsolvable.
In this work we discuss the issue of the police genre in Borges’s narrative. We chose to analyze four stories by the famous author to show the characteristics of this genre. This study consists of introduction, two chapters, conclusions and a bibliography. The first chapter deals with the detective genre and is divided into four sections. In the first section, we review the origin and the different terms of this literary genre. In the second section, we talk about the neopolicial as a derived genre, its founders and the most famous works of this new subgenre. Next reference is made to the American author Edgar Allan Poe as the founder of the detective genre. The last section deals with fantastic literature and the neo-fantastic in the Borgean narrative.
The second chapter is an analytical study of four Borges stories that have in common their belonging to the police genre. We highlight the most important elements in each story. “The garden of forking paths” represents a labyrinth where there are forks in time not in space. ”Death and the compass” is about a series of murders that occur in the fifth Triste-le-Roy where a detective undertakes the task of deciphering the mystery. ”Emma Zunz” is a revenge story in which Emma devises an incredible plan to avenge the death of her father. In ”Abenjacán el Bojarí, dead in his labyrinth”, the author creates a labyrinth where he tries to confuse the reader. The protagonists of the story, Dunraven and Unwin, try to discover the true story of Abenjacán el Bojarí, who is locked in the main chamber of the labyrinth.
In the conclusion we will emphasize the most important results that we have obtained throughout the study. The bibliography collects the relevant sources that helped us in the development of this work.
