Abstract

and Conclusions Summary Giardia (G.) lamblia is one of the most common human and animal parasites affecting about 280 million people annually. It inhabits the duodenum and jejunum, and its transmission occurs through the faeco-oral route. The clinical manifestations of giardiasis range from asymptomatic to both acute and chronic diarrhea with or without other gastrointestinal manifestations. Higher susceptibility to Giardia infection has been reported in infants and young children affecting the general health of the infected cases causing growth retardation and vitamin deficiency Metronidazole remains the drug of choice for the treatment of giardiasis. Unfortunately, the drug has mutagenic and carcinogenic activities in bacteria and mice respectively in addition to many side effects. The development of drug-resistant strains of Giardia is another threatening factor. For these reasons, there is an increasing interest to search for new, safe, and effective natural drugs. Since gold NPs have shown outstanding inhibitory effects against parasitic, bacterial and fungal infections, the present study was designed to assess the therapeutic efficacy of gold nanoparticles compared to metronidazole against G lamblia infection in rats To fulfill this aim:140 healthy laboratory-bred parasite-free Swiss Albino rats were divided into three main groups as follow group I (Control group of 40 rats Subgroup Ia; 20 non- infected and non- treated rats.
