Abstract

A stroke is a medical condition in which poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death. There are two main types of stroke: ischemic, due to lack of blood flow, and hemorrhagic, due to bleeding. They result in part of the brain not functioning properly. Signs and symptoms of a stroke may include an inability to move or feel on one side of the body, problems understanding or speaking, dizziness, or loss of vision to one side. Signs and symptoms often appear soon after the stroke has occurred. If symptoms last less than one or two hours it is known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mini-stroke. A hemorrhagic stroke may also be associated with a severe headache. The objectives of our study were to describe the epidemiological profile of stroke during the period of five years (2014-2018) and the year of the study 2019 besides stratification of risk factors among the patients admitted with stroke during the year 2019. Subjects and methods: This study was cross sectional one carried-out at Neuropsychiatry Department (free and economic departments) of Tanta university hospitals, Egypt. Tools of the study were: 1) file extracted sheets of the five years prior to the study (2014-2018). 2) A predesigned questionnaire for patients admitted with stroke at the year of the study (2019). It was about data related to epidemiological profile &risk factors related to stroke occurrence and outcome. The results of the current study can be summarized as follow: The total number of patients in the study was 3981 patients who consisted of 3435 patients of five years 2014-2018 and 546 patients of 2019. Regarding the previous five years prior to the study (2014-2018), the trend of stroke disease was increasing. Among the studied patients, (71.2%) were at
