Abstract

The rising temperatures associated with global warming may have serious direct and indirect consequences on crop production especially in cereals. In Egypt, rice is the primary food crop, in addition, rice production is important for national food security reasons and it has directly socio-economic importance. Egypt is self-sufficient in rice, but due to a high population growth rate and conversion of fertile soils from rice to other crops, rice production will be declined to levels insufficient to realize self sufficiency. In addition, water scarcity will reduce rice production due to decreasing the area cultivated by rice to save water to be used for other crops. Environmental stresses, such as water deficit and temperature rises are major factors limiting plant growth and productivity. Among the abiotic stresses, extreme temperatures will affect severely the growth and productivity of rice as well as the other cereal crops.
The objectives of the present investigations were to determine performance of some rice genotypes under both drought and heat stress conditions. Identify the most important traits associated with drought and heat tolerance in rice genotypes.
