Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the prevalence of BJHS in male and female patients attending rheumatology and rehabilitation outpatient clinic complaining of various musculoskeletal problems. 400 male and female patients were included in the study aged between 18 and 50 years. A diagnostic questionnaire was included to calculate the Beighton score and Brighton criteria to diagnose patients with BJHS. The prevalence of depression and anxiety in those patients was also studied using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) for depression severity and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) scale for anxiety severity. Age, sex, patient complaint, the primary site of pain, presence of associated symptoms as fatigue or sleep disturbances were included. Laboratory studies such as ESR, CRP were recorded. Beighton score was used to diagnose BJHS patients, it includes five simple maneuvers, nine items are scored based on a scale of 0-9, with a higher score representing greater joint mobility, a threshold cutoff point of 4 of 9 was used to categorize participants with BJHS. The Brighton criteria were developed to establish diagnostic criteria for BJHS and based on the determination of Beighton score, diagnosis is performed by the presence of two major criteria, or one major and two minor criteria, or four minor criteria. These criteria help to distinguish BJHS from other connective tissue disorders.
