Abstract

Renewable energy can help not only to meet the energy needs but also in the sustainable economic growth. Although the solar energy market is expanding rapidly, it faces a lot of restrictions like the high capital cost and discouraging incentive policies. The main target of this research is to introduce a suitable incentive policy and a dynamic pricing strategy that can adapt with using grid-connected PV and battery system for residential customers in order to maximize the gained profits and reduce the electricity bill in Egypt. This research studies the technical and economic effect of integrating PV and PV battery system with the utility grid taking into consideration different incentive policies (FiT and NEM). Also, the research proposes a time-of use (TOU) dynamic pricing scheme to be implemented with PV and battery system in order to encourage customers to use energy during the off-peak periods to reduce the electricity bill. The results are optimized in order to achieve the best system configuration to maximize financial profits. The research usestechnical and economic evaluation software to get the technical and economic effect of the grid-connected PV system using HOMER software and a comprehensive programming code developed under MATLAB environment. The results reveal that, decreasing both PV and battery system capital cost will enhance the system profitability while increasing the nominal discount rate will lead to lower system profits. Implementing TOU tariff may lead to an increase in the electricity bill while it represents a great opportunity to invest in the renewable energy to achieve an electricity bill reduction. This thesis is considered to be the first research that introduced a techno-economic viability for using grid-connected PV battery system in Egypt, in addition to suggest applying time-of-use dynamic pricing scheme in order to encourage customers to invest in PV system installation and achieve a monthly reduced electricity bill.
