Abstract Egypt has the highest hepatitis C virus (HCV) prevalence worldwide, with an estimated overall prevalence of 21.9% among adults.)1 HCV-induced inflammatory and immunological phenomena in the liver tissues are assumed to be directly responsible for in-vivo platelet activation.)2( Accordingly, activated platelets are considered to play a significant role in the pathogenesis of liver damage by stimulating fibrogenesis and mitogenesis of the liver cells.)3 Platelet factor 4 (PF4), also known as chemokine CXCL4, is released from the alpha-granules of activated platelets as a complex with a chondroitin sulfate proteoglyan carrier.)4 It disappears rapidly from plasma as it transfers to higher affinity heparin sulfate on endothelial cells, inhibiting local antithrombin (AT) activity and thus promoting coagulation.)5( |
