Abstract Chemically cross linked gelatin and Gelatin /Chitosan blends were successfully synthesized using glutaraldehyde as a crosslinker. The samples show stability in aqueous media up to 35 0 C but exhibit dissolution at higher temperatures. Adsorption efficiency of the samples is examined using an aqueous solution of aniline blue. Samples exhibit point of zero surface charge around pH 6. Samples attain adsorption equilibrium within 6 h and did not show saturation up to dye concentration of 100 mg L-1. kinetics data fit pseudo second order model. The activation energy values confirmed that the crosslinked gelatin and GelatinlChitosan .” " ~ " ” blends, up to 50% Chitosan content, exhibit physisorption process. However, blend with 75% Chitosan exhibits higher activation energy as an evidence of chemisorption behavior. Freundlich isotherm showed a better fit than the Langmuir isotherm, thus, indicating a multi layer adsorption of the dye on the adsorbent surface. Thermodynamics studies indicate that the adsorption is endothermic, spontaneous and leads to a higher entropy. The maximum dye removal achieved by 1: 1 GelatinlChitosan at pH 5 and 35°C was 99.8%.These results suggest that the GelatinlChitosan blend of 50 wt.% Gelatin and 50 wt.% Chitosan is a promising biodegradable eco-friendly adsorbent that could be used for removal of anionic dyes from wastewater. |
