Abstract Dissertation Abstract : Background: Early assessment of the child`s developmental skills is important for early treatment and preventing problems. The purpose is to provide a general view of the child`s developmental profile. The Bayley scales are supposed to be the worldwide gold standard developmental assessment tool of infants and toddlers. Aim of the study: standardize the normative score of the neurodevelopmental scale Bayley III, for normal Egyptian infants and toddlers. Research design: cross-sectional comparative design. Setting: The neonatal intensive care unit follow-up clinic and the Staff Day Work nursery are both affiliated to Mansoura University Children Hospital and randomly selected 3 private Day Care Centers. Subjects: convenience sample of children from 3 months to 42 months and 16 days of both genders (n=140), 134 mother and 6 fathers. Tools: tool (I): structured interview questionnaire sheet with Part (1): characteristics of infants/toddlers who participated in the study and Part (2): the participated children’s parents` characteristics, tool (II): Part (1): the Bayley III checklists of the cognitive, language and motor scales and, Part (2): 2 interview questionnaires of the social-emotional scale and the adaptive behavior scale. Results: The study demonstrated highly statistically significant differences between the recent study composite scores and the USA, UK and Malawi scores at p-value < 0,001. In addition, the recent study scores exceeded their scores. Conclusion: The results suggested that the Bayley-III can be a feasible instrument for the assessment of Egyptian young children’s development. Recommendations: Applying the study on a large sample of Egyptian young children in different settings, and increasing the pediatric nurses’ orientation about the importance of applying the Bayley-III items through continuous training. |
