Abstract

Non melanoma skin cancer refers to all the types of cancer that occur in the skin other than melanoma. Several types of skin cancer fall within the broader category of non-melanoma skin cancer, with the most common types being BCC and SCC. Incidence of the skin cancers (most of which are BCC and SCC) are by far the most common of all types of cancer. About 5.4 million basal and squamous cell skin cancers are diagnosed each year in united states. Eight out of 10 of these are basal cell cancers.
The human TROP2 is a cell-surface glycoprotein. The role of which is not well understood and the physiological ligand is still unknown. It was found that TROP2 was highly expressed in many cancers including oral SCC. However, its role in BCC and SCC was not yet studied.
This study aimed to evaluate the immunohistochemical expression of TROP2 in lesional affected and perilesional uninvolved skin of NMSC patients (BCC and SCC) compared to healthy controls, in addition to, correlate this expression with the available clinicopathologic parameters in those patients.
This prospective case control study included 44 subjects. They were 12 apparently healthy volunteers (controls group), 17 patients having BCC and 15 cases having SCC. Each patiant in the study was subjected to history taking, clinical examination and histological examination of skin biopsies (lesional and perilesional of BCC and SCC cases and control) for H&E and TROP2 immune-staining.
