Abstract

This study applies a branch of pragmatics to translation. It analyzes Grice‘s maxims in Naguib Mahfouz’s Hadith al- Sabah Wa- al-Masaa (1987) and three English translations to identify the problems of implied meaning in the source language and how they are translated in the target language. It is a comparative study that will provide the readers with the mechanism for determining the implied meaning, and how it can be dealt with while translating a literary text. To this end, the implicature is identified, and the reason beyond its emergence, which is the flouting of Grice‘s four maxims, is explained. The analysis unveils three strategies used by the translators to convey the implicature: Preserving the implicature to let the reader exert much effort to fathom the given example, explicating the implicature to communicate at the explicit level rather than the implied, and modifying the implicature through avoiding the violation of conversational maxims that occurs on the part of Naguib Mahfouz.
