Abstract

This study evaluates the clinical and microbiological effect of Indocyanine Green photosensitizer activated by Diode laser as an adjunctive therapy to scaling and root planning (SRP) in chronic periodontitis patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty moderate chronic periodontitis patients (16 males 14 females, aged between 30 and 58 years) were involved in the study. They were classified into 2 groups randomly. 1st group composed of 15 patients who received SRP in addition to Photodynamic therapy using diode laser combined with Indocyanine green photosensitizer, 2nd group composed of 15 patients who received SRP only. All patients were evaluated clinically by measuring (Plaque Index, Sulcus Bleeding Index, Periodontal Probing Depth and Clinical Attachment Level), and microbiologically by culturing subgingival plaque samples anaerobically for detection of total bacterial count, P.gingivalis & P.intermedia counts at baseline and after six weeks of periodontal treatment. Results: All periodontal parameters (PI, SBI, PPD and CAL), total bacterial count in addition to P.gingivalis & P.intermedia counts were revealed statistically significant difference after six weeks of treatment among both groups. However on comparing post-treatment values of P.gingivalis & P.intermedia counts in between groups demonstrated statistically significant difference between groups 1&2. Conclusion: The Indocyanine Green Photodynamic therapy offers a promising therapeutic approach in periodontal treatment as adjunct to SRP.
