Abstract

Vegetable oils are an excellent renewable resources for different industries, especially for polyurethane applications. It provides various advantages like availability and large range of possible chemical modifications among renewable resources. Because they are relatively unreactive, they must be functionalized to serve as feedstock for polyurethanes.
Introduction of hydroxyl groups at carbon-carbon double bond moieties opens the whole area of using the hydroxylated oils or polyols in polyurethanes applications. Hence, to get conclusions about the effect of structure of oils on the properties of polyols and PU accordingly, it is important to know the exact composition of the oil. Soybean oil and palm olein are considered the most abundant and affordable oils in the last 20 years.
The polyols were synthesized by epoxidation of vegetable oils and subsequent ring-opening of the epoxide groups to hydroxyl groups, depending upon the number of carbon-carbon double bonds in their fatty acids chains which are expressed by iodine value measurement.
In this study, soybean oil and palm olein were used to synthesize soybean oil-based and palm olein-based polyols by epoxidation of the oils then followed by ring-opening of oxirane rings. ATR-FTIR, iodine value measurement, oxirane oxygen content and hydroxyl value measurements were used to confirm the synthesis of each step.
