Abstract

Dental caries is the most common ecological biofilm-related oral disease in the world. If dental biofilms are allowed to remain on the tooth surfaces with the frequent consumption of sugar, acidogenic and aciduric bacteria will metabolize the sugar to organic acids. The low pH environment in the biofilm matrix can cause interruption in the balance between remineralization and demineralization causing dissolution of the tooth surfaces resulting in dental caries initiation. This eventually leads to an increase in the surface roughness that increases bacterial adhesion and biofilm thickness. Thus, it is a major advancement to treat early caries lesions by non-invasive methods that depends on remineralization utilizing a lot of products.Alternative natural remineralizing materials have been suggested as NHA which contains Po4 and Ca crystals that are naturally found in enamel, dentin, and cementum. Thus, it was meaningful to study the effect of synthetic NHA on bacterial adhesion to an initial enamel carious lesion.
