Abstract

Pregnancy, also known as gestation, is the time during which one or more offspring develops inside a woman. About 213 million pregnancies occurred in 2012, of which, 190 million were in the developing world and 23 million were in the developed world. The number of pregnancies in women ages 15 to 44 is 133 per 1,000 women.
Healthy eating is very critical before, during and after pregnancy. The nutritional status of a woman during the child-bearing stages of life has significant long-term consequences on the health and well-being of the mother, the growing foetus and newborn child. Studies have established that nutrition education during pregnancy is associated with positive pregnancy outcomes.
Several micronutrients are important for the health of the developing fetus, especially in areas of the world where insufficient nutrition is common. Women living in low- and middle-income countries are suggested to take multiple micronutrient supplements containing iron and folic acid. These supplements have been shown to improve birth outcomes in developing countries, but do not have an effect on perinatal mortality.
Adequate intake of folic acid, and iron is often recommended. In developed areas, such as Western Europe and the United States, certain nutrients such as Vitamin D and calcium, required for bone development, may also require supplementation.
Pregnant women who receive inadequate nutrition experience greater maternal morbidity (are more likely to be ill whilst pregnant) and have a higher risk of poor pregnancy outcomes (e.g. premature birth, miscarriage). They also have an increased risk of developing the following conditions anaemia, infection, lethargy and low productivity.
Therefore, the aim of the present study was to:
• Assess nutritional status of pregnant women toward their nutrition during pregnancy in Trenna family health unit before application of a health education program about healthy nutrition.
• Introduction of nutritional education program for pregnant women attending Trenna family health unit.
• Assess nutritional status of pregnant women toward their nutrition during pregnancy in Trenna family health unit after application of a health education program about healthy nutrition.
The study was conducted was on 350 pregnant women attending Trenna family health unit at their first trimester, in the context of time frame of 18 months.
Type of the study: The study was conducted in 2 phases:
− First phase: cross section study
− Second phase: an interventional study
Time of the study: The study was conducted in the context of time frame of 18 months.
First phase: Data collection for the study, lab investigation and data analysis were conducted in the context of time frame of 3 months (starting from 1st’ of August 2019 to the end of October 2019).
Second phase: Introducing an educational program and redoing lab investigation Conducted in the context of time 3 months (starting from the first of November 2019 to end of January 2020)
