Abstract

Investigating research articles (RAs) at both macro and micro levels has gained remarkable
attention, especially after the increasing pressure on researchers to publish in international
journals. However, the literature review (LR) section has been paid scant attention compared
to the great bulk of research conducted on RA's different sections. In order to fill-in this gap,
the current study aims at investigating the rhetorical structure, linguistic features, and citation
practices in a sample of 10 Egyptian-authored linguistics RA LRs published in local and
international English-medium journals between 2013 and 2019. The study followed a
combination of genre-based and corpus-driven approaches, analyzing the data qualitatively
and quantitatively. It adopted a number of models and used the state-of-the-art #LancsBox v.
5.1.1 (Brezina, Weill-Tessier, & McEnery, 2020). Findings revealed variation in the LRs
written by both groups. Moves 2 and 3 were used more frequently in the international sample
than in the local one, where the focus was on Move 1. Some new steps also emerged. More
lexical items, more integral and non-integral citations, more advanced citation functions,
more bi-functional and multifunctional citations, and more assimilation were used in the
international LRs than in the local ones. Both sub-corpora also differed in their use of the
past simple. However, they agreed on using the present simple and active voice the most.
They also used citation mainly for identification. The study contributes to a better
understanding of the rhetorical structure, linguistic features, and citation practices of
linguistics RA LRs by providing a comprehensive model that integrates the three axes. The
study has pedagogical implications for teaching Egyptian and apprentice scholars how to
successfully apply the model to produce more effective RA LRs. Future studies on larger
corpora are needed to provide more generalizable findings.
