Abstract

Summary
Thyroid nodules are being diagnosed incidentally with increasing frequency in the recent years .
The objective of our study is to evaluate and correlate between the role of high resolution ultrasound guided by TIRADS classification and DWI MRI in differentiation between benign and malignant thyroid nodules
Our study included 30 patients fulfilling inclusion and exclusion criteria mentioned before .
Ultrasound is recommended for all patients to confirm the presence of nodule, define suspicious sonographic features and assess the presence of additional nodules or lymphadenopathy .
Diffusion-weighted MR imaging (DWI) is non-invasive and does not involve administration of contrast or radiation exposure . It is done for all patients using 1.5T MRI . Structural characteristic of malignant or benign tissue will result in different signals on DWI, which may be quantified by calculating the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient .
Both ultrasound and ADC significantly differentiate benign from malignant thyroid nodules (correlated with histopathological results ) but the ADC value had higher specificity and positive predictive value .
