Abstract

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of the chelating agents, Phytic acid (IP6) with different concentrations and ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) solution on microhardness of root canal dentin. This study was conducted on thirty single rooted permanent maxillary anterior teeth. All teeth were instrumented using rotary files and irrigated by 2ml 2.5% sodium hypoclorite between each file, then were sectioned by longitudinal splitting of each tooth and embeded in acrylic resin leaving the dentin surface exposed. After polishing, the microhardness values of the untreated dentin surfaces were recorded by using Vicker’s tester. 60 root halves were randomly assigned into 4 groups composed of 15 samples each and immersed for 5 minutes with one of the following chelating solutions ,group I: was immersed in 10ml of phytic acid (IP6) 0.5% followed by 10ml of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite , group II: was immersed in 10ml of phytic acid (IP6) 1% followed by 10ml of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite ,group III: was immersed in 10ml of 1.5% phytic acid (IP6) followed by 10ml of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite, group IV: was immersed in 10ml of 17% ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid solution followed by 10ml of 2.5% sodium hypochlorite. Dentin microhardness values were recorded at close proximity to the initial indentation areas, and then calculation of the difference between baseline values and post application values were done. Numeric data were recorded, tabulated and statistically analyzed using ANOVA test, student t-test, Paired t-test and Kruskal Wallis test to compare the differences between the four groups.the results showed that group IV showed the highest percentage decrease in microhardness values, followed by group III then group II and the lowest percentage decrease was found in group I. with no significant difference between coronal, middle and apical third related to percentage decrease values.
