Abstract

Learning by doing physical models is one of the used techniques when teaching execution design in architectural education. But to what extent does this technique help to attain the minimum student performance standards within execution design context. In this research, an Execution Design Student Performance (EDSP) list was created by reviewing, filtering, and merging criteria set by three organizations that grant accreditation to architectural programs. Then, learning outcomes associated with different forms and settings of learning by doing has been reviewed. In addition, learning outcomes associated with the use of physical models as a “doing device”, instructional “intentionalities” and scopes of doing has also been identified and reviewed. At each stage of the research, the learning outcomes were compared and benchmarked using the EDSP list. Finally, a case study is conducted to test the accuracy of the extrapolated frameworks in predicting the potential learning outcomes of an educational experience and compare them with the actual attained learning outcomes. The results indicated that the frameworks had good reliability. This enables educators to use them when designing their educational activities according to the intended learning outcomes. Some techniques for using the frameworks and the EDSP list has also been demonstrated through a discussion of the studied educational experience.
