Abstract

Brachyuran crabs exhibit various concealment and disguise strategies to avoid predation and detection as a significant selective pressure (Guinot and Wicksten, 2015). These strategies are striking and sometimes unique. Concealment is observed in larval stages and juveniles as well as in adults. The numerous ways of concealment among brachyurans encompass not only mimicry and crypsis, but also two other modalities of camouflage that are unique to Brachyura: decoration and carrying behavior. Decoration, carrying and mimicry involve “being seen” but “resembling something else”, whereas crypsis means being “hidden”.
