Abstract Infective endocarditis (IE) is an infection of the inner surface of the heart, usually the valves. Despite the development of diagnostic and treatment measures it still a disease of high morbidity and mortality rate.There is no difference in gender but slight more common in males (55%) than female (45%).The causative organism for IE is mostly bacterial(95%). Many microorganisms can cause infective endocarditis. The term bacterial endocarditis (BE) commonly is used, reflecting the fact that most cases of IE are due to bacteria specially staphylococci and streptococci .The cause is typically a bacterial infection and less commonly a fungal infection. RHDstillthe predominant underlying heart disease in infective endocarditis patients in this study (33.3%) followed by diabetes mellitus (31.6%),Then patients with prosthetic valve were 18(30%),while patients on hemodialysis were 11(18.3%) and patients with congenital heart defect were 8(13.3%). Blood culture is the cornerstone of IE diagnosis as well as in deciding antibiotics of choices .in this study culture positive patients were (76.7%) and culture negative patients were (23.3%). Staphylococcus aureus was the most commonly detected organism (60.8%) followed by enterococcus(32.6%) then klebsiella (61.5). |
