Abstract The hospitality industry consumes large amounts of water. The operating costs of hotels may be impacted significantly by future water shortages. This study aims to determine water management’s best practices as an important issue in the Egyptian hospitality industry. A self-administered questionnaire was employed as the data collection tool and face-to-face interview to attain this aim. This survey consisted of 45 items, and these items categorized into nine groups, i.e., general practices (GP), kitchen (K), laundry (L), room service and accommodation (R), pool (P), gardens (G), operational performance (OP), competitive advantage (CA) and firm performance (FP). The questionnaire was directed to a random sample of employees in the investigated hotels. Three hundred forms were distributed, 272 forms, representing a response rate of 90.6 %, were completed and valid for analysis. The study hypotheses were verified over structural equation modeling (SEM) using moment structure analysis (AMOS v.25). On the one hand, the findings showed a significant relationship among all groups with firm performance and competitive advantages except laundry with OP also gardens with CA. On the other hand, there is a significant between OP and FP oboist the relation between CA and FP. Besides, thirteen in-depth interviews were conducted with managers in Greater Cairo hotels to analyze their water use and their techniques to conserve water. The results of this research indicated that managers overall have positive attitudes towards water. This study’s results offer managers sympathetic to using water management techniques to increase their water management methods’ effectiveness. Other water management issues are also discussed where water is a necessary resource for the tourist industry and many other sectors. |
