Abstract

Ocular ultrasonography is used to visualize the retro-bulbar and internal structures of the eyeball. This study was conducted to identify the normal ocular sonographic anatomy and biometry (CT, ACD, LT and GAL) in both horses and donkeys and recording ocular affections admitted to our clinic. The study was carried out on 58 animals 32 horses and 26 donkeys that were normal and affected horses and donkeys of both sexes and different ages. Trans-palpebral and/or trans-corneal ultrasnographic examination using multi frequency transducers were used at range of 5-10 MHz, 5-7 cm depth. High resolution ultrasonography (probe 12-18 MHz) was used for imaging the corneal integrity and iridocorneal angle shape and structure. The obtained result revealed no significant differences between ocular measurements of horses and donkeys (P< 0.05). Nine different ocular affections were diagnosed including cataract (65 cases), vitreal opacities (3 cases), retinal detachment (4 cases), lens luxation (2 cases), hypopyon (one case) and panophthalmitis (one case). In conclusion, ultrasonographic examination of equine eyes were useful as a diagnostic tool for diagnosis of ocular affections specially for deeper structures. Ocular biometry was of a great value for differentiating normal eyes form diseased ones.
