Abstract Sepsis is a preventable, life-threatening condition marked by severe organ dysfunction. Pediatric sepsis is a distinct entity from adult and neonatal sepsis, given the unique characteristics of children and the differences in sepsis etiology. Melatonin (N-acetyl-methoxytryptamine) is a neurohormone mainly secreted by the pineal gland. Melatonin might act as an anti-oxidation and anti-inflammation agent, suppress pathogens and prevents lipid peroxidation, reduces mitochondrial hydroperoxide levels, and restores glutathione homeostasis. the current study aimed to evaluate, the effect of melatonin adjunctive therapy on the pediatric septic patients admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) of Mansoura University Children`s Hospital (MUCH) through measuring the levels of pro-inflammatory markers, as IL-6, antioxidants, as Nfr2, SOD, CAT, GSH, MDA a lipid peroxidation marker, and MT1 gene expression and also, aimed to study the association of PICU sepsis with mortality related to melatonin therapy and biomarkers. |
