Abstract

In this study we studied the prevalence of electrolyte disturbance in the ICU and its impact on mortality and prolonged duration of admission for more than 7 days. we found that hyponatremia was the most common electrolyte disturbance in ICU then hypocalcemia then hyperphosphatemia then hypomagnesemia then hypokalemia. Moderate hyponatremia, moderate hypernatremia, severe hypernatremia, mild hyperkalemia, moderate hyperkalemia, severe hyperkalemia, mild hypomagnesemia, moderate hypomagnesemia and moderate hypocalcemia were significantly associated with increased mortality. Hypokalemia, hypermagnesemia and hypophosphatemia were insignificantly associated with increased mortality. Hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia were not associated with mortality. Moderate hyponatremia, severe hyponatremia, severe hypernatremia, mild hypokalemia, severe hypokalemia and mild hypophosphatemia were significantly associated with increased duration of ICU admission for more than 7 days. Hypomagnesemia, hypermagnesemia, hypocalcemia, hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia were insignificantly associated with increased duration of ICU admission for more than 7 days. We need in the coming studies to study the effect of correction of electrolyte disturbance on the outcome in ICU.
