Abstract • Background: Effective decision-making process requires the use of head nurses’ knowledge and skills which are essential to promote engagement with different approaches to decision making. Aim: Assess decision making skills among head nurses and its relation to their work engagement. Design: A descriptive correlational research design was used. Setting: In all Medical and Surgical units at Benha University Hospital. Subjects: This study consisted of all head nurses and their assistants (120). Tools of data collection: Two tools were utilized 1) Decision Making Skills Scale 2) Modified Utrecht Work Engagement Scale. Results: Showed that 75.0% of head nurses had a high level of decision making skills and 58.2% of them had highly of total engagement level. Conclusion: There was statistically significant positive correlation between total decision making skills and work engagement among head nurses. The study recommended: Head nurses need to be trained to participate fully in any decision making structures so as to have skills and competencies required for effective involvement in health care unit. More appreciation for high qualified head nurses that increase autonomy, feeling of responsibility and increase work engagement. |
