Abstract

Objectives of the Study:
This thesis aims to investigate and analyze the hagiographic manuscript that the reseacher was
able to obtain from the library of Deir al-Baramus, Coptic monastic order will be achieved
through study the life, saying, virtues of the Saints and Fathers, and their veneration in the
Coptic Orthodox Church. This theme provides valuable information that help pilgrimage
tourism at Wadi al-Natrun, especially at Deir al-Baramus. This study will also help the tour
guide in churches and monasteries to explain more and more about the Holy Family’s journey
in Wadi al-Natrun. This theme can also benefit religious tourism, because there is variety of
information about the monastic life of the saints and desert fathers that will be displayed
through some selected manuscripts from Deir al-Baramus. Moreover, this theme will
introduce the history of Coptic language and its dialects to qualify tour guides to read
manuscripts and icons for tourists in various churches and monasteries.
Methodology of the Study:
When the reasercher began to write this thesis about Coptic monansticism, the reasercher
asked many questions about the monks, Hermits and Holy Fathers who had many stories and
saying of fathers about them. You will know their monastic life in detail, their love for the
Lord in their hearts, how their spiritual struggle, and their overcome over the demons through
some of the manuscripts that will be published from Deir al-Baramus. The founder of the
monasticism is Saint Antony the Great who was truly Father of all monks; thus, the monks
who came from various Western Middle ages, considered themselves truly his sons and
supported him.
