Abstract

Many students at the university level face many barriers related to the social, personal, academic and other aspects, and these problems differ in terms of type and severity according to age, gender, life experiences, and socio-economic status. These problems are educational, psychological, social and health problems.
they are known and seek to develop appropriate solutions On the personal level of the student or the general level in society, it will inevitably contribute to the promotion of education, and enable it in the future to face the pressures of professional and academic life and its difficulties and overcome them and in light of this, identifying and identifying psychological and social problems among students of the Faculty of Nursing is very important because It will contribute to identifying these problems, and it will also help improve students ’cognitive and professional performance and overcome these barriers, develop professional educational programs and help students achieve their professional expectations and future aspirations (Alexander & Fraser, 2015).
Aims of the study
This study aimed to:
1. Assess psychosocial barriers facing nursing students in their academic career.
Subjects and methods
This study has been portrayed under the four main designs as following:
I- Technical design.
II- Operational design.
III- Administration design.
IV- Statistical design.
I-Technical design
The technical design includes research design, setting, subject and tools of data collection.
A- Study design:
A descriptive design was used to conduct this study.
B- Setting:
This study was conducted at the faculty of nursing at
sohag University..
C- Study subjects:
A sample size included all available nursing students in faculty of nursing from second to fourth grade (448) students.
D- Tools for Data Collection:
The data were collected through using the following tools.
(I): Socio-demographic sheet:
The researcher designed this sheet to student’s characteristics in their academic career. It contains the following items: Sex, age, residence, social status, years of education and where do you live.
A- Psychological barriers (Questionnaire):
Psychological barriers:
is a valid and reliable questionnaire that is specifically designed to assess psychological barrier of undergraduate nursing students with their academic career
B- Social barriers:
This sheet was designed by the researcher to assess social barriers facing nursing student in their academic career.
Results:
The Main findings obtained from the study can be summarized as following:
• The finding of the current study revealed that, near two thirds (65.2%) of studied student are in age group >20-22years with mean age 20.46±5.77 and nearly three quarters (73.2%) were male more than half of studied students (55.8%) were from rural areas and less than two thirds of them (61.6%) were female.
• The present study revealed that 42% of them had severe psychological barrier.
• The present study revealed that 37.5% of the studied student had sever social barrier.
• The present study revealed that there was highly statistical significant relations between the studied student psychological barrier and their age (years), residence, level of education, where do you live at and have you ever failed. (p<<0.001).
• The present study revealed that there was highly statistical significant relations between the studied student level of social barrier and their age (years), residence, level of education, where do you live, with p-value p<0.001.
• The present study showed there was highly statistical significant relations between the studied student level of psychological barrier and their social barrier, with p-value p<0.001.
• The present study revealed that there was positive correlation and significant relation between the of total score of Psychological Barrier and total score of Social Barrier p<0.001.
Conclusion
Based on the results of the present study, this study concluded that, more than one quarter of the studied students had mild level of psychological barrier. Also more than one quarter of them had moderate level of psychological barrier. While nearly two fifth of them had severe level of psychological barrier, slightly more than one third of the studied student had mild level of social barrier. Also more than one quarter of them had moderate level of social barrier. While less than two fifth of them had severe level of social barrier In addition, there was statistically significant positive correlation between total score of Psychological Barriers and total score of Social Barriers. Also, Age, gender, social status, residence, level of education, living in university housing and living with both parents as factors that affect the students’in their academic career.
Recommendations
Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are proposed:
 Training sessions and workshops should be organized to improve relationships between students and their lecturers and support academic guidance role.
 Orientation program should be done for students in the beginning of every academic year regarding clinical and theoretical courses of the program, staff and support &resources in the faculty.
 Channels of communication for expressing students’ feedbacks positive or negative, comments, complaints or objections to the administration should be available at the end of every term through questionnaire including their opinions about program, class teaching, clinical teaching and support and resources.
 The Faculty should organize periodical meeting with group of students in order to discuss most common problems facing students regarding their program, class and clinical teaching and support &resources.
