Abstract

Great advantages are obtained by the operation of three phase induction motor instead of DC motor in traction applications. Less need for maintenance, longer life time and cheap. The induction motor should give a high torque during the periods of start spinning as it happens with DC motor to be enough to overcome the train load. Control methods are necessary for the suitable high running torque, high braking torque and speed control at different load torque. Recently, attention has been given back to electric vehicles has been given more attention. Combustion engines in addition to electric motors powered the first modern vehicles in the last century unexpectedly. An electric motor can propel a vehicle by changing electrical energy into mechanical energy. Electric motors have various advantages over combustion engines according to conversion efficiency, power density, and low-speed torque characteristics. Furthermore, electric motors can change mechanical energy back to electrical energy when it operates in braking mode. Such characteristics of electric motors make electric drive more powerful, more energy efficient, and more compact. The use of power electronics has enabled the control of a motor’s frequency that has got rid of the need to start and run motors from line frequency. v This thesis focuses on increasing the efficiency of the induction motor and inverter in the EV. To control the induction motor by changing the frequency values applied to the 5 Hz to 100 Hz. In this work, characteristics of inverter control for induction motor drive the electric vehicle are achieved. Two types of computer programs are used to construct the simulation analysis of three phase induction motor. The mathematical analysis is computed by the QBASIC programs. The computed curves are obtained by the ORIGN programs. Due to the difficulty of obtaining an actual electric vehicle in the lab, a fan load equivalent to the electric vehicle is used. The load characteristics are measured at different motor applied voltage for energy saving.
