Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers in the world; it is the third most common tumor in Egypt in males after urinary bladder and lymphohematopoietic malignancies and ranks fifth in females following bladder cancers. Deaths from CRC are also on the rise, with an estimated 551,269 deaths in 2018. CRC incidence varies widely throughout the Middle East and North Africa region, ranging from 6.6 per 100,000 in Egypt to 32.0 in Jordan (Tfaily et al., 2019).Aim of the study:
The current study aimed to assess awareness about colorectal cancer risk factors among employees at Minia University.Research Design:
A descriptive cross-sectional research design. Setting:
This study was conducted at Minia University; five (5) faculties (Faculty of Medicine- Faculty of Early Childhood Education- Faculty of Tourism and Hotels- Faculty of Science- Faculty of Nursing) were randomly selected
Study population:A sample of 365 employees was selected to participate in this study from the first of July 2020 to the end of December 2020.Tool for Data Collection:-
One structured questionnaire, it consisted of three parts: I-First part: Interviewing questionnaireII-Second part: General colorectal cancer awareness questionnaire
II-Third part: Colorectal cancer’s risk factors awareness questionnaire
Pilot study: Before starting to collect the data, a pilot study was carried out on 37 employees (10%) to test the feasibility and the applicability of the questionnaire and to identify the most suitable time to collect data; they were included in the study.
Data collection procedure:-
Five formal letters were issued from the faculty of nursing, Minia University, to the Deans of the selected faculties to gain administrative approval. Employees were interviewed two days a week, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., for a range of 25 to 30 minutes for each studied employee, from July 2020 to December 2020, to clarify the study’s goals and obtain their cooperation.Oral consent was taken.
Results:-
87.4 % of the studied employees did not have enough awareness about colorectal cancer, and (12.6 %) of them had good general awareness level about CRC.
 73.2% of studied employees had poor or fair awareness about CRC risk factors and slightly more than one quarter (26.8%) of the studied employees showed good awareness regarding CRC risk factors.
There is a highly statistically significant difference as regards the level of awareness of studied employees and level of education, occupation, and the family history of CRC.
Conclusion:
There is a weak awareness of more than half of the employees included in the study, with a statistically significant relationship between the participants’ awareness of the risk factors for colorectal cancer, their level of education, family medical history, and occupation.
Recommendation:-
oInitiatives to raise awareness of CRC and its risk factors through health education.
o Urge health practitioners to efficiently and safely disseminate information about safe lifestyles and cancer prevention to the general public.
Conducting further researches to investigate barriers and misconceptions around CRC screening programs.
