Abstract Palliative care is specialized nursing care for people living with a serious illness. Aim: The aim of the study is to assess nursing students’ awareness regarding palliative care among end-stage renal failure patients. Design: Descriptive design was utilized to conduct this study. Settings: The study was conducted at Benha Teaching Hospital, Benha University Hospital where the Benha Faculty Nursing Students are trained. Sample: Systematic random sample was used, it includes 121 students from total students 484 as one/fourth according to the list of students in a format. Tools: Two tools were used to collect data (I): A structured interviewing questionnaire to a) assess demographic characteristics of nursing students, b) knowledge of nursing students about palliative care and end-stage renal failure and c) reported practices of nursing students regarding palliative care for end-stage renal failure, (II): Modified Likert Scale to assess nursing students’ attitude regarding palliative care among end- stage renal failure patients. Results: 49.6% of studied nursing students aged 20 years, 18.7% of studied nursing students had good knowledge about palliative care, 38.1% of them had good knowledge about renal failure, 32.2% of studied nursing students had satisfactory practices regarding palliative care and 63.6% of studied nursing students had positive attitude toward palliative care. Conclusion: There was statistically correlation between total knowledge and total practices and there were statistically correlation between total practices and total attitude. Recommendation: Design and implement health educational programs about palliative care according to the standard guidelines for nursing students. |
