Abstract The defunnnctioning stoma decreased the rate of symptomatic anastomatic leakage post colorectal surgery which is the worst complication so our aim of this study is to compare temporary loop ileostomy versus temporary loop transverse colostomy as each type of defunctioning stoma has its advantages and disadvantages. This study included forty patients diagnosed with rectal cancer admitted to colorectal surgery unit in Alexandria university hospitals and patients were divided into two groups randomly by closed envelope. Twenty patients were subjected to loop transverse colostomy and twenty patients were subjected to loop ileostomy and the two groups were operated with the same standardized surgical procedures routinely used in our institution. We compared both groups as regard: - Construction operative time - Postoperative complication - Postoperative quality of life - Stoma closure complication After the analysis of our results we found that in this study the overall complications were higher in number of cases in ileostomy group (45%) than in colostomy group (15%) with statistical significant value. In More specifically, temporary colostomy is associated with an increased rate of postoperative complications, including stoma retraction and wound infection, while the principal disadvantages of temporary ileostomy include high stoma output, dehydration, electrolytes disturbances, skin irritation and the overall number of complications. |
