Abstract

The epimeletes is a high administrative official in the Ptolemaic administration. The Ptolemies incorporated this office into their administrative system towards the end of the 3rd century B.C. most likely, in the reign of Ptolemy IV Philopator. The documents of the epimeletes in the 3rd and 2nd centuries B.C. show that the Ptolemies assigned to this official several duties, for example:
• The epimeletes had a function in distributing seed loans to royal farmers.
• The epimeletes was responsible for agricultural affairs, e.g. the irrigation works.
• The epimeletes was one of the officials responsible for grain transport to the royal granaries in Alexandria.
• The epimeletes was involved in the process of tax farming.
• The epimeletes was responsible for receiving reports of real estate declarations
• The epimeletes had a great role in controlling royal monopolies.
• The epimeletes had a function in state sale by auction.
Besides many other functions that had been assigned to him.
The relation of the epimeletes to other officials can be divided into 3 levels:
First, the relation of the epimeletes to the central administration officials: at this level the epimeletes is junior to the dioiketes, the hypodioiketes, and the epistrategos.
Second, the relation of the epimeletes to the nome officials: the epimeletes was the head of the financial administration in the nome; although our documents are perplexing concerning the relation of the epimeletes to the strategos, the oikonomos, and the basilikos grammateus. Third, the relation of the epimeletes to the district and village officials: the epimeletes was superior to all officials of this level of
administration.
The epimeletes had also official relations with military officials, police officials, and the court of the chrematistai.
There was Always only one epimeletes in the nome. This nome official had sometimes a subordinate staying in the large temples, e.g. the Serapieion. This subordinate also carried the title epimeletes, and his function was to supervise the allowances that were granted annually by the Ptolemies to the temples.
