Abstract

Superior seedless is the most promising cultivar that can be adapted to Egyptian condition with good production and fruit quality. Superior is ripened early (first of June) and meets the required quality for local and foreign markets such slight Muscat flavor, lower acidity, sweet, firm and crispy taste and this makes it occupies advanced order in exportation compared to grape cultivars. To widespread the cultivation of this variety in unsuitable soils such saline soils, it was necessary to find an advanced agriculture practices to adapt the growing and production of Superior seedless under such conditions. Therefore, three grape rootstocks were suggested for that purposes, Couderc, Dog Ridge and Salt Creek. These rootstocks were used to test the act of Superior seedless grape compared to its own roots under soil salinity and recommend the most proper ones under this condition. The current study was carried out in 2016 and 2017 seasons in a 5-yearsold vineyard of Vitis vinifera Superior seedless on own roots and on Dog Ridge, Salt Creek and Couderc as rootstocks with planting space of 3 m between rows and 2 m within rows resulting density of 700 vines/ Fadden in sandy soil under drip irrigation system in a private farm located at Al Mansouria, Giza Governorate, Egypt. Vines were grown on supported Barron system and pruned to 120 buds per vine (12 canes X 10 buds/ vine). There were four treatments arranged in randomised complete block design each had five replicates inclusive three vines for each as follow: T1: Superior seedless on own roots (control), T2: Superior grafted on Couderc rootstocks, T3: Superior grafted on Dog Ridge rootstocks, T4: Superior grafted on Salt Creek rootstocks. Several parameters were checked up some correlated to bud behavior such bud burst and fertility, other correlated to vegetative traits like shoot length and width, leaf area, numbers of leaves/shoot, numbers of shoots/vine and more for yield and fruit quality such cluster mass, number of cluster/vine, cluster length and width, berry length and width, juice volume of 100 berries, total soluble solids (TSS), Total sugars and acidity in juice. Moreover, compatibility between superior grape and rootstocks under investigation was checked up for the whole parameters measured. Furthermore chemical components were checked up in the canes such total carbohydrates, in leaves such total chlorophyll and in petioles such N, P, K, Mg, Na and Cl. The results showed that the highest values of traits of bud behavior such bud burst and bud fertility was recorded in Superior seedless grafted into Salt Creek rootstock, then came Superior seedless grafted onto Dog Ridge and Couderc rootstocks, while the lowest values was recorded with own rooted Superior seedless. With regards to vegetative growth parameters such shoot length and width, leaf area, numbers of leaves/shoot, numbers of shoots/vine, Superior seedless grafted onto Salt Creek rootstock achieved the highest values, then Superior seedless grafted onto Dog Ridge and Couderc rootstocks, while the lowest values was recorded with own rooted Superior seedless. In connection with yield and fruit quality characters like cluster weight, number of cluster/vine, cluster length and width, berry length and width, juice volume of 100 berries, total soluble solids (TSS), total sugars and acidity in juice. Furthermore chemical components were checked up in the canes such total carbohydrates, in leaves such total chlorophyll, Superior seedless grafted onto Salt Creek rootstock proved to be superior and achieved the highest values except the acidity, while Superior seedless grafted onto Dog Ridge and Couderc rootstocks came second in those characters, but own rooted was the lowest except the acidity parameter. Concerning compatibility between superior grapes and the rootstocks in this study, results showed that high compatibility between them. Furthermore chemical components in petiole such N, P, K, Ca and Mg was higher in Superior seedless grafted onto Salt Creek rootstock than Superior seedless grafted onto other rootstocks and own rooted, while the percentages of Na and Cl showed opposite trend.
