Abstract

The main effects of Intermittent Fasting [ alternate day fasting (ADF) and timerestricted
feeding (TRF) on body weight, glucose homeostasis, the lipid profile,
Malondialdehyde, Total antioxidant capacity, gene expression of key enzymes
hepatic G6PDH, TKT and Adiponectin level and White Adipose Tissue, fortyfive
male adult Sprague dawley rats weighing 200 ±50g, were used, divided into
three groups, each of 15 rats. control groups: rats feed ad libetum, ADF group:
rats receive food day on day off (ADF) and TRF group: rats fasting for two days a
week (Monday and Thursday) plus the three middle lunar days in the month (TRF)
for a period of three months. from he obtained results, A marked reduction in BMI
of ADF was noticed starting from the 1st month which becomes statistically
significant in the 2nd and 3rd month till the 3rd month of fasting in comparison with
the control group but TRF group showed a significant reduction in BMI in the 3rd
month compared with control. There was a marked reduction in glucose level
starting from 2nd month of experiment in ADF group which was significantly
different from that of control group and TRF group in 9th and 10th weeks and the
reduction in glucose level in ADF group was significantly different from control
groups in 9th week till 12th week and HOMA IR in both groups. TC, TAG, LDL
and VLDL were decreased, whereas adiponectin was increased in both groups
(ADF, TRF) in a time-dependent but more remarkable increase was in ADF group
which is statistically significant than TRF group. The highest Adiponectin level was
detected at 3rd month of ADF group especially in ADF group. Normal hepatic
histology was noticed in the three groups. But a significant reduction in the size of
adipocytes was noticed in ADF more than TRF protocol, so browning increases in
both groups ADF and TRF but significant increase in Browning occurs in ADF
group While the metabolic benefits of TRF appear quite less effectiveness on most
parameters, there is some suggestion that the metabolic changes produced by ADF
protocol is more effective than those noticed in TRF protocol.
