Abstract Breast cancer is a significant cause of morbidity and the second leading cause of cancer death in female. Early detection followed by appropriate management is currently the most effective strategy to reduce breast cancer mortality rate. MRI is increasingly being used in management of breast cancer, with more sensitivity at detecting cancer as well as post-operative recurrence than MG and US. MRS represents a non-invasive and non-ionizing method for characterization of breast lesions on the basis of the metabolic (chemical) content as tCho. The aim of the current work was to study the efficacy of 3T-Magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging in characterization of breast lesions. In the current study; 50 patients suffering from breast lesions or coming for screening with positive family history or post-operative assessment were evaluated in the Radiodiagnosis department at Alexandria Main University Hospital. MG was carried out in 40 patients. All patients had US and MRI examination. 35 patients had histopathological evaluation. MRI was performed on a 3T Philips Ingina MR scanner, Philips Medical systems, Netherlands, using a dedicated phased array 16 channel breast coils. Twenty seven patients (54%) were proved to be having malignant lesions after histopathological examination. 23 patients (46%) had benign findings; 8 of them (16%) were pathologically proved and 15 patients (30%) had clinical and imaging follow up after six months. |
