Abstract

The prediction of the axial capacity of slender reinforced concrete columns is one of the most complicated design issues. This is attributed to the fact that both geometric and material nonlinearity responses as well as time-dependent effects significantly contribute to the failure loads. The present research work is an attempt to introduce a rational design approach relying on a mechanistic model to predict the non-linear behavior. A comprehensive parametric study shall be conducted through a numerical model to display the slender reinforced concrete columns behavior. The model shall be verified through a comparison against experimental data. Although the current Eurocode presents one of the most rational predictions of the secondary effect of slender reinforced concrete columns, it still suffers from inaccurate predictions of the column curvature. For this purpose, an axial curvature relationship was proposed aiming to simulate the correct column behavior. A mechanistic model was developed, which shall be used to compare the proposed method along with various code provisions against the numerical model results. The studies shall include both isolated and braced slender concrete columns.
