Abstract

The extensive use of antimicrobial agents has led to the rapid spread of multiple drug resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. Recently, the efficacy and common use of quinolone category of antibiotics has been accompanied by a steady global increase of quinolone (Q) as well as fluoroquinolone (FQ) resistance that is often associated with accumulation of different mechanisms within one resistant clinical isolate. Our aim in this study was to investigate the main mechanisms of fluoro/-quinolone resistance among our highly fluoro/-quinolone resistant K. pneumoniae isolates obtained from different hospitals in Tanta, Egypt. In addition, our study aimed at finding potentially effective natural agents that can be used either alone or in combination with FQs to enhance their activity and to control the prevalent fluoro/-quinolone resistance mechanisms among these isolates.
