Abstract

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a serious, potentially life-threatening disorder characterized by recurrent cessation of breathing during sleep associated with complete or partial airway obstruction. The prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea is increasing worldwide. It affects all age groups but increases in prevalence with age. Obstructive sleep apnea has a negative impact on the patient’s cognitive functioning and psychological health due to chronic sleep fragmentation and nocturnal hypoxemia that results from obstructive sleep apnea. Therefore the presence of cognitive function impairment and psychological symptoms associated with OSA has negatively impacted patients’ quality of life since it interferes with daily life activities and social interpersonal relationships. The aim of the study: Assess the cognitive function and psychological health status for geriatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Method: Study Design: The study followed a descriptive research design. Setting and subjects: This study was carried out in the outpatient clinic of the Chest Medicine Department at Main Mansoura University Hospital. A purposive sample 100 geriatric patients with obstructive sleep apnea attending the previously mentioned setting was recruited in the study.
