Abstract

Corrosion affects all areas of the economy, from the integrated circuit to the bridge made of reinforced concrete. Oil fields are the biggest victim of corrosion and severe economic loss is caused due to the metallic corrosion on piping and plant systems. One of the most economic methods is the application of corrosion inhibitors. The surfactant inhibitors have many advantages such as high inhibition efficiency, low price, low toxicity, easy production and handling. The activity of these surfactants depends on their types, compositions and concentrations; in addition to the environmental factors, such as (temperature, pressure, solvents and additives). In this study six cationic surfactants were prepared , characterized and evaluated as corrosion inhibitors for X- 65 type tubing steel in deep oil wells formation water under CO2 environment at 50oC and as antimicrobial agents against sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques were used to evaluate these compounds as corrosion inhibitors, while the serial dilution method was used to evaluate their inhibition effect on sulfate reducing bacteria growth. The results showed that the prepared surfactants have good antimicrobial activities against the SRB as well as they have acceptable efficiency as corrosion inhibitors for tubing steel in deep oil wells formation water.
