Abstract

Recent trends of medical education suggest that the ultimate goal of teaching medical professionalism is to support students and residents as they develop their own professional identity. Consequently, there has been a shift in medical education from teaching professionalism concepts as an outcome, to focus on strategies and processes of PIF. To achieve the recommendations of the National Authority for Quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE) published in 2009, Alexandria Faculty of Medicine (AFM), took the initiatives to reform its traditional discipline-based curricula to be more relevant to the physicians’ practice. A new integrated curriculum has been developed and introduced in the academic year 2009/2010. Cultural background and education are factors that a physician experience before joining a CoP, yet these factors actively participate in developing PI.
This study aimed to assess AMUH junior residents’ perception towards their professional identities, and aimed to assess the role of cultural background, and undergraduate education in the development of professional identity of AMUH junior residents.
