Abstract

Northern part of the Gulf of Suez suffered from considerable sources of land based activities, industrial effluents and harbours activities. This study aimed to evaluate level of metals pollution (Cd – Pb – Cu – Zn) in water, sediments and marine organisms from northern part of the Gulf of Suez. The results showed that metals values in water were lower than the recommended value for water quality; while values of pollution load index for sediments and bivalve Brachidontes variabilis indicated decline in quality of the investigated area. A novel chitosan/green algae composite was prepared and used in removing of cadmium from aqueous solution under affecting of different factors on biosorption process as pH, contact time, temperature, biomass amount and initial Cd(II) concentration which carried out to obtain the optimizing condition of the prepared composite (NImp-Cs-Alg); the obtained results showed that the optimizing condition were 5.5, 120 min, 25 oC, 0.1g and 10 mg/L, respectively. Equilibrium isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics models of Cd(II) uptake, and ability to reuse were studied. In addition, applied the composite in removing Cd(II) from different water types. FT-IR spectra indicated that functional groups –OH, -NH, C=O and C=C were shifted in Cd(II) loaded and unloaded composites.
