Abstract

Background: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common preventable and treatable disease that is characterized by persistent respiratory symptoms and air flow limitation that is due to air way and / or alveolar abnormalities usually caused by significant exposure to noxious particles or gases.
Objective: To asses the pattern of COPD patients according to this questionnaire as COPD prevalence, morbidity and mortality in Egypt are still lacking information and have to be estimated.
Patients and Methods: This was a cross sectional study was conducted, including 100 Patients diagnosed to have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease by spirometry. The duration of the study ranged from January to December 2019.
Results: The current work showed that (68%) had chronic cough and (58%) had expectoration. Dyspnea grade II was (39%) of all patients. Dyspnea grade III was (33%) of all patients. Most of studied cases received prescription by pulmonologist (64%). As regard treatment with bronchodilator this study showed that about (56%) receive oral bronchodilator and (44%) receive inhaler therapy. As regard the severity of COPD according to GOLD 2019 among the studied cases was variable but severe COPD represented in more than one third of all patients (34%). Hospital stay duration ranged from 2-5 days with mean value 3.60±1.014 days. Patients improving show that 24(51.1%) were improved. Mortality show that only 2(4.3%) patients with mortality. There was negative correlation between FEV1 % and age of COPD patients in years. There is significant negative correlation between FEV1 and smoking index.
Conclusion: COPD is a major public health problem in Egypt and call for more research to be directed toward preventive measures and efforts. Increase COPD prevalence between younger age group. Smoking becomes more abundant between females.
