Abstract

This thesis will shed the light on the libraries in ancient Egypt, which were located in temples, palaces and the private libraries. As the library was not a Greek initiative, so Alexandria Library was not the first library in history. Therefore the thesis mainly
discusses the first date and basic evidence for libraries throughout the ancient Egyptian history. The main concern of this study is to explain the function of the pr-’nb and the pr-md3t institutions and how they were different from each other. The
reason for choosing this topic; libraries in ancient Egypt pr-nh / pr-md3t, as libraries were the. entrance to get deep with knowledge, wisdom and different types of
sciences.
Priests were associated with temples:. performing rituals, making offerings and participating in the economical activities of temples’. While scribes were dealing with organizing many different administrative processes, recording all activities inside the .ancient Egyptian society and sometimes had a role in managing the economic matters”, Firstly, the topic deals with the difference between the library (pr-md3t) and the house
of life (pr-’nb). The library was the place where they preserved and kept books, both religious and administrative, while the house of life is the place where the children
attended and participated to get well-educated. Secondly, the researcher will discuss the difference between scribes according to their titles and position in society. Libraries in ancient Egypt had a lot of different papyri in all branches of science, such as: astronomy, medicine, religion, mummification and mathematics. The thesis will show that libraries actually existed in ancient Egypt, also will demonstrate the libraries history, purpose and contents. It will also display the librarians’ role and their titles. Documents kept inside the temple were religious and official documents, while documents kept inside the royal palace were administrative ones.
