Abstract

Next-generation wireless standards, such as Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) standard, support very high peak data rates for mobile users, up to 1 Gbps in static and up to 100 Mbps in high-speed mobile environment. Relaying is one of the proposed technologies for LTE-A networks to extend the coverage and increase the capacity.
The main motivations of this thesis are as follows: First, it investigates the optimal relay node (RN) position for uplink in LTE-A network. It proposes the flow load balance (LB) which includes the amount of resources consumed by RN and adopts the number of user equipments (UEs) to associate with RN. Simulation results are capable of increasing energy efficiency (EE) by 10% based on load balancing compared to unbalanced loaded network.
Second, it presents a proposed power allocation (PA) optimization method for multi-user, based on EE and spectral efficiency (SE) in LTE-A. The optimization problem is formulated as multi-objective optimization (MOO), considering both downlink and uplink transmissions. The mathematical expression of optimal power for EE and SE (OPES) is derived for Transparent and Non-Transparent modes with amplify-and-forward (AF) relay. Numerical results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed OPES formula compared to previously used techniques.
