Abstract

as with any drug or medication, vaccines also require special attention because, though they are considered safe and beneficial to prevent and control diseases, they can trigger mild or even severe adverse events; some are expected while others may be unusual. Aim: this study aimed to assess knowledge and practice of nurses towards adverse events of vaccines in expanded program on immunization in the health care centers. Research design: A descriptive cross-sectional research design used in the current study. Setting: all 14 health care centers& the only health office in Port Said city. Sample: All nurses working in vaccination clinic, with total number of 64 nurses wereincluded in the study. Tools: Data collected by two tools namely: tool (I) Nurse’s knowledge of vaccination & adverse event (it includes two parts; socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge of the studied nurses), tool (II)(it includes two parts); first part is the observational checklists to assess nurse’s practice about vaccination and second part is observational checklists to evaluate the cold chain system at the studied health care centers. Results: the results revealed that, regarding the general knowledge of nurses of vaccines 96.9% of them had satisfactory knowledge, 53.1% of them had satisfactory knowledge about contraindications of vaccines, Unfortunately, 40.6% of nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge about adverse events of vaccines.Moreover, 57.8% of the studied nurses had inadequate practice before and at the beginning of the vaccination sessionand in overall practice regarding immunization, while 93.8% of them had adequate practice during the vaccination session.100% of the studied health care centers had monitoring devices and had temperature chart on the door of the refrigerator, also most of health the centers recorded temperature more than twice per day.Conclusion: most of the nurses had satisfactory score regarding overall knowledge of immunization, more than half of them had unsatisfactory knowledge regarding adverse event of vaccines. Unfortunately, more than half of them had inadequate practice.Recommendations: the study recommended to establish continues in-service’s training programs for nurses to reinforce knowledgeand practice of nurses related to adverse event of vaccines, continues training for nurses to keep them up to date in relation to immunization.
