Abstract

Obesity is a disarray of energy balance that primarily considered as a disorder of lipid metabolism. It is one of the major public health problems in the world because of its association with an increased risk of various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia and cancer.
This study aims to examine the effect of Plantago ovate, Fucus vesiculosus, Cassia angustifolia and Prunus avium by 5 and 7% herbs powder and compared with effect of Glucophage drug for obesity rats.
Seventy two white male albino rats, weighting 160±5 g were used in this study and divided into twelve groups, six rats each. One of them was kept as a control –ve group, while the other eleven groups were fed in high fat diet (10% fat in the form animal fat) to get obese rats. All rats were divided into the following groups:
group (1): Rats (n=6) Negative control group, Healthy rats.
group (2): Rats (n=6) Positive control group, obese rats fed on basal diet only.
group (3): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + glucophage drug.
group (4): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + 5% (Plantago ovata) powders formula.
group (5): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + 7% (Plantago ovata) powders formula.
group (6): Rats (n=6)obese rats fed on basal diet + 5% (Fucus vesiculosus) powders formula.
group (7): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + 7% (Fucus vesiculosus) powders formula.
group (8): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + 5% (Cassia angustifolia) powders formula.
group (9): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + 7% (Cassia angustifolia) powders formula.
group (10): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + 5% (Prunus avium) powders formula.
group (11): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + 7% (Prunus avium) powders formula.
group (12): Rats (n=6) obese rats fed on basal diet + 5% mixture of all the herbs.
At the end of the experimental period (4 weeks), the following was done:
• Rats were weighted, and then body weight gain and feed efficiency ratio were calculated.
• Blood samples were collected after 12 hours fasting then centrifuged to separate the serum which used for the following determination & evaluations:
- lipid profile (Total cholesterol (TC), tri-glycride (T.G), high density lipoprotein (HDL.c), low density lipoprotein (LDLc), very low density lipoprotein (VLDLc)).
- Glucose levels.
- Liver functions (ALT, AST and ALP)
- kidney functions (urea, creatinine, uric acid)
