Abstract

The present work was carried out to explore the protectoive activity of aqueous broccoli extract against cisplatin (CP) induced nephrotoxicity in rats. The aqueous extract of broccoli was analyzed for DPPH, and GC-mass chromatography. Randomly, 40 adult male albino rats were equally divided into four groups, each of 10 as follows; control gp (1) which kept without medication, broccoli treated gp (2) orally administered aqueous extract of broccoli (200 mg/kg BW) for 30 days, CP-intoxicated gp (3) injected IP with a single dose of cisplatin (16 mg/kg BW) at the day 15th and kept kept without medication till the end of the experiment. The combination gp (4) received both broccoli and cisplatin as groups (2, and 3). At the end of the experiment, rats in all groups were weighted and their weights were recorded. Heart rate and blood pressure were measured at Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University. Urine, blood and kidney were also collected for urinalysis, hematological, clinico-biochemical, histopathological and EM examinations.
By the GC-MS analysis of aqueous extract was found that the extract comprised 24 components which included Octacosane (36.27%), 14-Octacosanone (27.97%), Erucic acid (7.5%), 3,2’-Dihydroxyflavone (3.0%), Hexadecanoic acid (2.97%), Dehydrocostuslactone (2.26%) and ç-Sitosterol (1.82%).
