Abstract

After the construction of the Aswan High Dam, most of the Nile River
sediment loads have been deposited in Nasser Lake. In turn, the river
almost sediment- free downstream the dam. Local scour and deposition in
the Nile River were observed at many locations. Several sources of
sediments were developed from wind-blown sands, bank failures, dredging
operations, flash floods and the riverbed. There is a problem found in most
of the intakes in Nile River especially at power plants that use river water
for cooling. These problems are in the form of severe vortices, uneven flow
distribution at pump intake and sedimentation problems in front of intakes, as the sediment entering causes blockage of the suction basin and the
associated vibration and wearing of the pump impellers.
There are several methods in the literature to solve such problems but
such methods might have a negative impact on the operation and
maintenance of the intake structure.
In this research, the baffle column approach was investigated to
reduce the amount of sediment entering the intake structures without any
adverse impacts on the operation process. This approach depends on installing baffle columns on the top of the upstream side and the offshore long side of the sedimentation basin of the intake structure. The hybrid approach will be used in this research, a physical model of undistorted scale 1:50 in addition to a numerical model
are used. The models show that baffle columns are effective in reducing the
amount of sediment entering the intake also the optimum design of the.
